The Patch on the Old

Dr. Kayode Ajayi · August 31, 2025

Are you trying to patch the old instead of embracing the new? In this powerful sermon, we explore Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 9:14–17 about the patch on the old garment and the new wine in old wineskins. God did not send Jesus to repair our old lives—He came to make us brand new vessels.

Through scripture and examples, we see how:

The Pharisees fasted for show, but Jesus called for heart transformation (Matthew 6:16–18; Luke 18:10–13).

The Israelites left Egypt but never entered the Promised Land because they remained old wineskins—unwilling to stretch in faith (Exodus 16:3; Numbers 11:4–6; Numbers 14:1–4; Hebrews 3:16–19).

Peter, Gehazi, and Demas remind us that proximity without surrender leaves us broken.

Only a new heart made by the Spirit can carry the new wine God is pouring out today (2 Corinthians 5:17; Zechariah 4:6).

🔥 This message will challenge you to stop patching the old and embrace the new life of the Spirit.

👉 Scriptures covered: Matthew 9:14–17, Isaiah 43:18–19, Hebrews 12:1–3, Exodus 16, Numbers 11 & 14, Luke 18:10–13, Matthew 6:16–18, Matthew 16:13–23, Acts 2, Acts 5:29, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Zechariah 4:6.

🙏 Prayer Points:

Lord, break every old wineskin in me—fear, pride, love of the world.

Make me a new vessel for Your new wine.

Fill me afresh with Your Spirit.

📌 Don’t just patch the old—step into the new season God has for you!
